A Rappahannock River Engagement: Jen + Kenny

A friend named Tina, tickets to a Toys for Tots benefit, and the year 2006. That is where it all began. Tina had been trying ruthlessly for months to introduce Jen and Kenny, but for whatever reason, it just hadn’t happen. Well, not until this night anyway. Jen had tickets to a local holiday benefit, and it was the perfect opportunity for Tina to, once again, suggest she meet Kenny. The stars must have finally aligned, and Jen was game. Little did she know that her life would be forever changed. Jen, Kenny, Matchmaker Tina, and her date attended the benefit, and when Tina and her date bailed, it was just Jen and Kenny left to finish out the evening. You would think that after the fun and good conversation they had that Kenny would have asked Jen for her phone number, but he did not. It wasn’t until a week later that Kenny hinted to Tina that he’d like to have Jen’s number. Soon after a first date was planned. Over fondue and flowers (good job, Kenny!), Jen and Kenny began their romance.

For as long as they have been together, Kenny has been the planner of vacations. In fact, Kenny is so proficient at vacation planning, Jen jokes that it was really his calling in life to be a travel agent. So, after Jen gifted Kenny with tickets to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ first home game last season, Kenny decided to plan a Florida vacation around the game. The plan was for them to spend a week at a friend’s place in Coco Beach after the game and get some well-deserved R&R. While packing, Jen noticed that Kenny’s bags were especially heavy, but she didn’t inquire further. After all, Kenny is the travel agent, so the man has to know what he needs, right?!? Jen didn’t think more of it until Kenny confronted her about having tampered with his belongings. She recalls him being unusually defensive, but at the time didn’t have a clue. Evidently, Kenny had some surprises in that bag…

While in Tampa, Kenny and Jen shared dinner at Bern’s, their favorite steakhouse. It was dimly lit, romantic, and the food was delish. Jen noticed that Kenny wasn’t quite himself and seemed to be a bit restless, but again, she didn’t mention it. But when he asked her where the bathroom was, after just having told her where the bathroom was, Jen had to ask him if he was ok. Kenny got up from his seat, and when Jen turned, there he was…pulling a box from his pocket and kneeling on one knee. See, Kenny had thought that Jen knew it was coming, but after seeing her face turn white as a ghost, he knew…. SHE HAD NO IDEA. The next day they not only celebrated the start of the Buccaneers football season, but the start of their life together as well.

The next morning, Jen begged Mr. Travel, aka Kenny, to sleep in. Kenny wasn’t having it. She couldn’t figure out why in the world there was such a rush when they were just headed to Coco Beach, and for Pete’s Sake, they were on vacation! Can’t a girl sleep in? When Jen insisted and explained forcefully that it wasn’t “like we have a plane to catch,” Kenny pulled out two passports and informed Jen that yes, they did in fact, have a plane to catch… To JAMAICA Ok, ladies…I’m pretty sure that by now, we alllll know why Jen is hanging on to this one!

Jen and Kenny caught a flight that morning to their favorite Jamaican resort, and Kenny spent the rest of the week showing Jen just how much he loved her and that life together would always be better than living life alone.

Jen and Kenny are planning an October wedding, full of deep purples, navy blue, peacock feathers, and a million other sentimental, personal touches that will warm anyone’s heart.

Jen and Kenny,
You guys were so fun to hang out with for like, 23 hours, the other day! lol! But, seriously, I had a blast. Thank you for sharing your family with me and for opening up your hearts and sharing your history with me along the way. Your images are amazing, and I hope that they are a true representation of the love you share. I am super excited about your wedding and absolutely blessed to be a part of your special moments. Thank you.

We started the session and Jen’s family farm.  These were the first images of our session, and they were already rocking it.

2013-05-07_0001

You can never have too many barn photos…  And we are glad we got a few, because it was right after this that two horses ran us out of the pasture.  Not sure if the horses thought we were food, but they were sure acting like it.  It was time to go!

2013-05-07_0002

Instead, we took some shots on the other side of the fence.  Much, much safer…

Don’t you love the colors they chose?

Jen, you are beautiful!

Because we went to Jen’s family’s farm, I was able to meet Jen’s father, her sister-in-law, and her sweet, sleeping niece.  But the main reason for the visit was to involve Jen’s grandmother who is currently suffering from Alzheimer’s.  Grandma Bonnie has good days and bad days, but Jen has known for some time now that her grandmother would not be able to make it to the wedding.  For years they have talked about Jen’s wedding day, and it was especially important to Jen that she be included in photos in some way.  We used the beautiful evening last Thursday to pay her a visit.  And, let me tell you, Grandma Bonnie is feisty!  We spent a short amount of time with her before she would have no more of it, but the time we shared and witnessing the love that Jen possesses for her grandmother was beautiful.  Truly.

2013-05-07_0009

Love, LOVE this one.

2013-05-07_0010

And these as well!

2013-05-07_0011

This was kinda a traveling engagement session.  Once we left her parent’s home, we ventured onto a nearby ball field for some shots.  Kenny played baseball, and Jen played softball.  Because they share a love for baseball, they wanted to incorporate it somehow.  Thank you to the 12 year olds who let me hijack their gear for the sake of some fab ring shots!

2013-05-07_0012

Next stop?  The Rappahannock River!  Tina… remember her?  See above.  Well, Tina’s family has a house on the river, and it’s pretty dang amazing!  She allowed us to use the surrounding properties to finish out Jen and Kenny’s engagement session.  Love this spot.

2013-05-07_0013

So relaxed together!

2013-05-07_0014

I was smitten with these colors on them.  Enjoy the next series of images from our walk around the river.  One of my favorite places to photograph folks, for sure.

A Libby Hill Park Engagement: Sara + Mike

Last Wednesday, I had the absolute honor of spending some time with Sara, Mike, their adorable Aussiedoodle, Duff, in Libby Hill Park for an engagement session. It was so much fun! I had met Sara before (she is a local glamour photographer who you should TOTALLY check out at this link), and it was a blast to get to know Mike as well! The entire evening was wonderful…aside from the 1.8 million inch worms that wanted to camp out all over us, but despite their best efforts, even the inch worms couldn’t ruin our fabulous engagement shoot.

Sara and Mike chose Libby Hill Park as the site for their engagement session because it was the place where Mike had proposed. After several years of dating, Sara and Mike had gone out for dinner at The Hill Cafe in Church Hill, and then they took a romantic stroll into the park. Beneath a large tree, on a street made of cobblestone, Mike asked Sara to be his. Forever. And she couldn’t have been happier to say “yes!”

Sara and Mike are planning an intimate destination wedding at the Manasota Beach Club on Manasota Key, Florida this October, and I cannot be more excited to be there to document those precious moments when they say “I Do.”

Sara and Mike,
Simply, THANK YOU! Thank you for a wonderful evening in the park and for the dinner invite…which I’m taking you up on ASAP!  I look forward to getting to know you both more as we plan for your Florida gulf coast wedding, and I am thrilled for the life the three of you have ahead of you! You exude kindness and sincerity, and I again thank you for allowing me to come along on your journey.
M xoxo

Without further ado… Sara and Mike! (and sweet, sweet Duff)

The tree under which Mike proposed to Sara! So sweet…

A Dorey Park Wedding: Crystal + Mark

The day was sunny and the weather was warm. In otherwords, it was exactly what Crystal and Mark had been hoping for their wedding day. After all, they were planning an outdoors wedding at the nearby Dorey Park, and they wanted it to go off without a hitch.

The bridal party was preparing in a nearby hotel, and the mood was calm. Crystal and her ladies moved with a purpose and they couldn’t have been more excited to be celebrating this ocassion. Mark and his groomsmen did not move with quite as much urgency, but that was absolutely not an indication of the complete joy Mark was feeling as he prepared to meet his bride. He was smitten with Crystal, and he had no reason to be nervous. He had been waiting for this day for a long time, and he couldn’t wait for the moments to come.

The bride and her bridesmaids made their way to the ceremony location in a white, stretch limosine. The ceremony site was draped in white tulle and looked magnificent. It was simple and elegant, and it was a perfect representation of the love that Crystal and Mark share. The couple had met on the water, and they share a love for boats and scuba diving, and all related things. It was only right that the ceremony took place on a gazebo jetting out into a lake. Crystal looked stunning in her strapless, detailed gown as she, on the arm of her father, made her way across the wooden path to her groom. It was there, with a lake in the background and surrounded by an intimate group of friends and family that they pledged their forever.

The reception that followed at the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center was full of laughter, dancing, and love. Crystal and Mark were gracious hosts as they made their way around the room trying to speak with each of their guests individually. Again, a perfect reflection of the people they are. Genuine. Kind. Thoughtful.

Crystal and Mark,
Your day was amazing. Everything obout it fell into place perfectly, and all the small touches that made it yours were fabulous. Your kindness and friendship throughout your engagement and wedding day have been a true pleasure, and I thank you sincerely for letting me walk down this path with you. I hope you are as in love with your images as I am and that they always make you feel the way you did that day.

M xoxo

You did good, Mark!

A University of Richmond Engagement: Amy + Will

When their mothers pull out the old photo albums, there they are in photos. Both of them. Little did she know when she sat behind him in third grade that he would one day be her husband. They weren’t even high school sweethearts. Despite growing up on the same street and going through school together, they never paid each other any attention. In fact, after graduation from high school, it took another 13 years (THIRTEEN MORE YEARS?!?) for the stars to align. But once they did, Amy and Will didn’t look back. In January of 2010, Will asked Amy out for sushi, and the rest is history.

Many, many dates later, Will and Amy (and Will’s sheltie, Twix) decided to join their lives and move in together. Soon after, they adopted another sheltie, Snickers. The four of them lived together happily until Will was deployed to Iraq. Will’s absence was felt constantly, and Amy counted the days until he would return. Every. single. one. And when Will did return, he had a plan. He never wanted to be away from Amy again, and he decided that a beautiful diamond ring would see to it that he got exactly what he wanted.

On this past Valentine’s Day, Will asked Amy to be his wife. She was (of course!) happy to oblige. They are planning an amazing peach-and-orange-themed, June wedding at a Virginia Bed and Breakfast, and they couldn’t be more excited!

Amy and Will,
Thank you so much for going along with all my crazy ideas during your session! I am grateful for the opportunity to have met you. I hope you are as in love with your images as I am. I think they are gorge. Best wishes and lots of fun as you continue to prepare for your big day!

A Virginia Manor House Wedding: Lacey + Joe

The dogwoods were in full bloom, and the grounds were immaculately landscaped.  Despite the late arrival of Spring, there was green all around us.  It was the perfect backdrop for the day that would be the first day of the rest of their lives.  Lacey and Joe had been waiting for this day for years. Well, at least Lacey had been waiting for this day for years…  But, like all other good things, this day was worth the wait.  I am certain Lacey would agree…

Upstairs in the Manor House, Lacey’s bridesmaids (and her one bridesman, James) tended to her every need, and kept a handkerchief nearby. Lacey’s heart was large and full. Full of love. Full of excitement. And full of joy.  And in between the laughter and love, there were tears.  Tears of joy.  For this day…this day that she had waited many years for…was finally here, and Lacey could no longer contain her overwhelming emotion.

Downstairs, the groomsmen had a different approach to the day. It involved banter.  Lots and lots of banter.  And Joe didn’t seem to mind a bit.  Joking aside, Joe had no doubt that he was surrounded by the people who knew him and loved him most.  And the smiles that resonated from the faces of his groomsmen as they watched their friend prepare to marry his love, was proof.

Lacey stood on the arm of her father, took a deep breath, and took a step.  A step towards a new life, towards her future, towards Joe, and she never looked back.  She met Joe under a garden gazebo, basked in sunlight, surrounded by friends and family and with her hand in his, Lacey promised Joe that she would be there.  For forever…Through the good, the bad, and football season…Many football seasons, in fact, despite their being fans of different teams.

The guests made their way to the cocktail hour, enjoying hors d’ oeuvres and wine on the lawn until the newly married couple arrived for thier first dance.  The rest of the reception went off without a hitch, and the guests couldn’t have had more fun!  They celebrated, danced, laughed, and loved well into the night.  The food catered by Eat Catering and the cake by Confections Couture were fabulous, and the details that Lacey chose were amazing.  I’m kind-of in LOVE with this wedding!

Lacey and Joe,

You are two of the most genuine, fun people I have met along my way, and I am actually kind-of sad to see your wedding day pass.  What am I going to do without random Facebook messages from Joe?!?  :)   I have enjoyed every moment of our time together, and I couldn’t be more thrilled for the two of you.  In my world, I see a lot of things, and when I look at you two, I see an eternity of love and laugter.  Lacey, with Big Joe by your side, your life will not be boring.  Rest assured!  Thank you so much for your kindnes and for allowing me to walk with you during this special time.  I am truly grateful.  Enjoy the Dominican, and soak up some sunshine for me!

A Pocahontas Park Wedding: Anne + Dave

Tall trees lined the miles-long, paved driveway as I made my way to the reception venue at Pocahontas Park to meet Anne. It was beautiful. The rain had stopped and the sun was trying to show it’s face through the clouds. The trees went for as far as I could see. They share a love for the outdoors, and Anne and Dave couldn’t have chosen a better place to celebrate their love.

The reception hall was bustling with some of the most important people in Anne and Dave’s lives.  They were on a mission to make this day…the day their friends would marry…the best it could possibly be.  And they did just that.

Anne was calm as she spent the hours before her wedding with her mother, her sister, and her best girl friends.  Across the lawn, Dave was no less content.  If either of them were the least bit nervous, you couldn’t tell.  But then, why would they be?  This day was a long time coming, and if Anne and Dave knew nothing else, they knew that this was exactly where they were meant to be with exactly the right person.

When it was time for the First Look, and Anne took her first look at her groom through the trees, waiting for her with his back-turned to her, she was overcome with emotion.  She stopped and breathed in the magnitude of the moment.  Anne walked to Dave, gently touching his shoulder when she reached him.  As he turned and their eyes locked for the first time that day, it became crystal clear.  They were content, in love, and ready to face the world.  Together.

The rest of the day ran seamlessly.  The rain held off and the intimate, outdoor ceremony overlooking a lake couldn’t have been more beautiful.  Afterwards, the evening was full of dancing, singing, laughter and love.  A good time was had by all.

Anne and Dave,

Thank you so very much for allowing me to part of your special moments and to help your memories last a lifetime.  May your wedding day images always take you back to that magical day when you said, “I do.”  Much love and happiness always.

M xoxo

The outdoor-themed wedding was a perfect reflection of Anne and Dave’s personalities.  I chose to shoot the details outdoors to more fully tell an accurate wedding-day story.

Anne’s Galina dress was gorgeous!  She also chose to wear her grandmother’s aquamarine ring on her right hand.  It made  a perfect “something blue.”2012-01-01_0004

Dave plays the guitar in two bands and he chose these rad shoes to represent that aspect of his personality. Love them!

Anne’s sister, Terry, helped Anne as she prepared to meet her groom.

Dave’s best man and oldest friend, Mike, flew in from the west coast for the special day. Mike took his job seriously and ensured Dave was exactly where he needed to be at all times and ready to go. Good job, Mike!

Hey there, handsome man.

The First Look…which you know I LOVE. This series of images are my favorite from the day. Anne and Dave were amazingly calm and content. I think it shows in their portraits. Don’t you?

How cool is this cake topper!?!? However, there was no cake. Anne and Dave chose to have a brownie bar. One word: Delish. There were cream cheese brownies, mint brownies, chocolate brownies, peanut butter brownies, toppings, ice cream… Get the picture?

A Country Virginia Engagement: Sara + Dan

It was 2010 during an after-work visit to Cheeseburger In Paradise, a local pub, for happy hour when Sara and Dan’s fate was sealed.  After several Landshark Lagers and a spontaneous, co-ed trip to the salon for pedicures, Sara and Dan knew their lives would never be the same.  And neither would Dan’s feet.  This was his first pedicure, but Dan admits that the experience was life-changing.  And while this evening would not last forever, Dan was determined not to let his relationship with Sara come to such an abrupt end.  Unbeknownst to Sara, Dan asked one of her friends for her phone number.  It appears that Dan had some plans up his sleeve….

Sara had enjoyed herself that evening, and a lot of laughter was had.  Evidently, one of Dan’s friends ended the evening with pink toenails, and let’s be honest…who isn’t going to laugh that that?!?  Sara found Dan to be a tad arrogant at first, possibly misreading his unshakable confidence.  But lucky for Dan, Sara found him insanely charming.  In the end, that charm is what won Sara over.

From then on, Sara and Dan lived life together.  They laughed and loved, planning for their future.  Together.

Fast forward to Christmas Day, 2012.  Sara and Dan were home celebrating Christmas together before they ventured out to visit family.  Every Christmas since they were together, they embraced the tradition of the Christmas Pickle.  This tradition can be traced back to Germany, and each year a pickle-shaped ornament is hidden on a Christmas Tree.  The lucky person to find it is destined to receive good fortune in the upcoming year.  Just prior to leaving home that day, Dan asked Sara to find the pickle ornament that was hidden on their tree.  Sara was happy to oblige.  Who doesn’t want good fortune, right?  Well, after finding the Christmas Pickle, Dan instructed Sara to close her eyes and hold out her hands.  She felt him place a wooden object in her hands.  She opened her eyes to find a picture frame.  In it was a piece of paper displaying some of their favorite lyrics.  The print in bold stated, “A whisper away from changing everything.”  Sara was immediately impressed with Dan’s thoughtfulness and was thrilled to receive such a sweet gift.  She turned and placed the frame on the table so they could leave, but when she turned back around, Dan was kneeling.  His hand was extended, and he was holding the most beautiful diamond ring Sara had ever seen.  Dan, on bended knee, asked for Sara’s hand in marriage, and once Sara was able to speak, she (of course) excitedly exclaimed, “YES!”  Dan, being the smooth man that he is, then keyed the song from which he had taken the lyrics for the frame.  And Sara and Dan danced.  This was the first day of the rest of their lives, and they savored every.  single.  moment.

Dan equates their love to a Starbucks Caramel Macchiato.  He is high-octane, and she is super sweet. I couldn’t agree more.  Dan is confident, energetic, and insanely kind-hearted.  Sara is genuine, smart, and gorgeous.   It is completely clear that these two have a solid, true love, and I couldn’t be more lucky to have been a part of their special moment.

Sara, Dan, and Sara’s parents met me in Burkeville, Virginia this past Sunday.  From there, we drove about 40 more minutes to a family farm.  If I knew where I even was, I’d totally tell you.  I just followed their white van, and all I know after that is we ended up in one of the most incredibly beautiful locations I have ever seen.  No joke.  The farm was spectacular, and these images in no way do it justice. We had a total blast, and I am super pleased with the end result!

Sara and Dan, thank you! Thank you!  Thank you!  I had sooo much fun with you this weekend, and I so appreciate your warmth and trust.  Your family was amazing, and I have no doubt that the other folks in your life are just as fabulous.  I’m cannot wait for your November wedding at the Mill at Fine Creek!  I hope you enjoy your engagement photos and the story they tell.  This is your love story, and I’m blessed to be a part of it.  -M xoxo

At one point, Dan suggested they go into the barn and look out that top window.  Plans changed pretty quickly when he started opening the barn door and realized something was alive inside.  Now that I think about it, we never actually found out what it was.  BUT, I’m here to tell the story, so that is the important thing, isn’t it?

2013-04-08_0002

I need to just tell you that Sara and Dan totally rocked this session.  I tend to stumble over my directions sometimes while shooting.  You’d think as a mother, I’d be extra good at multi-tasking, but shooting and talking is NOT my strong point.  At any rate, it didn’t matter.  These two just got it.

2013-04-08_0003

I am in love with how much they are in love.

2013-04-08_0013

This is one of my favs…

2013-04-08_0012

What a beautiful smile, Sara!

2013-04-08_0022

I asked Dan what his first impression of Sara was.  This was his response: “Dayum, baby dayum, baby dayum.”  Can’t you see why?

2013-04-08_0018

Here, we were giving Dan his “15 minutes of fame.”  Often, we use these guys as accessories to highlight their bride-to-be, but it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t give them a time to shine as well.  This was one of Dan’s.  He loved every minute.

2013-04-08_0025

So, this house is very old and very unique.  I wish I could tell you about it the way that it deserves, but I can’t.  All I know is that those walls are something special.  And if you want more information, we can call Sara’s dad.  He knows EVERYTHING about this place, and I was in awe of all the information he was able to share.  He also has a knack for location scouting, so don’t be surprised if he’s on my payroll one day…

2013-04-08_0030

I was a little concerned about the lack of light in this house, but the window light was perfect.  Natural light is my fav.

2013-04-08_0031

So in love…

2013-04-08_0034

Another favorite.  It exudes sweetness.

2013-04-08_0036

I joked around with Dan, calling him GQ.  But get a load of Sara.  She’s one hot chick.

2013-04-08_0037

See what I mean?  Gah!

2013-04-08_0038 2013-04-08_0040

It’s probably a good thing I’d never be able to find my way back to this place.  I’d make it my weekend getaway, haven, run-away from life spot.  Every. weekend.

2013-04-08_0052

I love how natural these next several images look.  The camera loves them.

2013-04-08_0053 2013-04-08_0054

Swoon.

2013-04-08_0058

This is another building on the property.  I could sit on this porch and listen to the crickets anytime.

2013-04-08_0060

How fabulous is this quilt?!?  I am always excited when clients bring props!  It shows their personality and adds a personal touch to the shoot.  This worked out perfectly.

2013-04-08_0062

Sara and Dan work together at a military supply company, and they love this country.  Dan’s grandfather was a soldier and this flag belonged to him.  The couple wanted to honor his grandfather during the session somehow, and this is what we came up with.  Again, another perfect idea.

2013-04-08_0066

As the sun began to set, I asked Sara and Dan to do a little walking, and I shot them as they did so.  Beautiful couple. Beautiful backdrop.  I have the best job.  EVER.

2013-04-08_0069

Gorge.  Plain and simple.  All of these.

Tyler, the Police, and the Pope

They say that laughter is good for the soul.  If that’s true, then my soul is in some seriously good shape.  And I have my seven year old son, Tyler, to thank for a large part of that.  Simply put, Tyler is hilarious.  Sometimes he means to be funny.  Sometimes he doesn’t.  But regardless of his intention, I find myself laughing out loud at that kid ALL. THE. TIME.  He has always had a more mature sense of humor than most children his age, and he understood comedic undertones and sarcasm at an early age, so I shouldn’t be surprised.  Yet, I am.  And I don’t think I’m surprised by the fact that he is downright funny.  But I am most definitely surprised by the bits of information that he seemingly pulls out of his back pocket at random moments.

I have a Tuesdays with Tyler recurring post, but let’s be honest…. I have totally neglected that post.  And to be frank, I don’t want to wait until Tuesday to share with you one of my favorite “Tyler-isms” EVER.  The following conversation happened today as we pulled into the McDonald’s drive through.

Seeing a police car ahead of us in the drive through line:

Tyler:  “The police can’t eat at McDonalds!”

Me: “What?  The po-po can’t like McDonald’s, too?”

Tyler: “The po-po???  Who’s the po-po?”

Me:  “I don’t know.  Who do you THINK the po-po is?”

Tyler:  (pauses) “Francis the 1st?”

This literally sent me into hysterics to the point that I couldn’t even order our drinks!  I love my kid.  And I love that he, at the age of 7, knows that there is a Pope  AND the Pope’s name.

Hopefully this little story has brought a smile to your life the way it brought one to mine!  And because a photography blog MUST have a photo….

Pope Francis I.

Richmond Rockstars! Introducing Rebecca Santelli: Professional Organizer and Owner of Neatest Nest

Hi, friends!  I am back with another installment of Richmond Rockstars!  In this edition, I would love for you to meet Rebecca Santelli.  Rebecca, too, is a neighbor.  Can you tell I live in one A-MAZING neighborhood with A-MAZING people?!?!  Well, I totally do.  And Rebecca has skills I wish I could inherit.  She is a professional organizer and owner of Neatest Nest.    Rebecca organizes like a champ.  No joke.  Whenever I stop by, I fantasize about what it would be like to live in such a calm, organized space.  Rebecca, however, is not just good at organizing her home, but she is good at organizing her life.   She has kids, a husband, her own business, and she bakes.  She bakes fabulous cookies in a variety of flavors, and I have no clue how she does it.  Which is why she is the expert and I am not.  So, maybe I should stop running my trap and let you hear all about it from the person who actually knows a thing or two!

Oh!  And as always, follow through to the end.  There’s a super giveaway from Rebecca just waiting for a special bride!

Now, Here’s Rebecca!

Professional organizing

Michelle: Hi, Rebecca!  Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Rebecca: Hi! I’m Becky Santelli and share my life with my best friend and supportive hubbie, Ray. We live in Mechanicsville, Virginia with our two beautiful girlies, Summer (11) and Tessa (9), as well as two very silly cats, Sugar and Mo. In my free time I love practicing yoga, visiting the beach, taking bike rides, and spending time with my family.

Michelle: What made you decide to start your own business?

Rebecca: Organizing was something I did for fun, for many years, for friends and family. Last year, when blowing out the candles on my well-lit birthday cake, my wish was to truly live my life with passion. It was as if a light came on inside me and showed me my path; I very soon thereafter decided to share my organizing passion and talents with others by becoming a Professional Organizer for a living!

Michelle: What do you enjoy most about helping folks get organized?

Rebecca: It’s most enjoyable to problem solve with my clients. When clients present their organizational dilemmas to me, it’s fun to create new systems that specifically address their needs. I love helping and educating my client’s to have a simpler, easier, and more efficient life.

Michelle: What areas do you help others organize? How?

Rebecca: My company, Neatest Nest, helps organize or redesign the following spaces: attics, basements, bathrooms, bedrooms, closets, garages, home offices, small business offices, kitchens, living rooms, and playrooms. First we do an initial assessment of the space and present an “Action Plan” of things that can be done to solve the organizational issues. The client can choose to complete the Action Plan on their own or hire Neatest Nest to provide hands-on help.

Michelle:  In what ways can your business and the company add value to a bride’s life?

Rebecca:  Organizing can add value to a bride’s life by keeping her calm, cool and collected. Planning ahead, having a “to-do” list, and managing the details allows a bride to feel in complete control of her wedding. A bride’s ultimate goal should be to truly relax and enjoy her beautiful day! Neatest Nest suggests finding a wedding binder, website or app that assists in keeping track of the myriad of details involved in the planning and execution of her big day!

Michelle:  Is there anything else you want to share about yourself or the company?

Rebecca:  One word…GRATEFUL. I’m so grateful to have a loving, supportive husband who has encouraged me to spread my wings with my business. I am grateful for the ability to share my talents and passion with others. And finally, for my clients who allow me into their “nests” and trust me to help them get organized, I am so.very.grateful.

Michelle:  Thanks so much for taking the time to share your passion with us!

In any business, it is important to have consistent branding.  Rebecca is branded EVERYWHERE, and I love it.  Her Neatest Nest logo and coordinating objects are scattered through her home, and it’s a perfect reflection of her and what she loves to do.

Rebecca has a small office space set up in her home. How perfect is this space?!?! Love everything about it. And I especially love the motivational sticky notes!

Professional organizing

I decided to take photos of two rooms in Rebecca’s home, so you could see how clean and calm her living environment is. This is not a woman who wants to tell others about organizing. She lives it. Clearly, this woman knows her stuff.

Rebecca is so sweet, and she wanted to give this wedding organizer to one lucky bride. If you are a bride and would like to win this wedding planner, please comment on this blog post with your name, your fiance’s name, and your wedding date. A Rural Virginia Engagement: Lacey + Joe

Seven years ago beneath the dim lights at the Midway Lounge, Lacey met Joe.  Country music played on in the background and folks danced around them as they began to talk and get to know each other.  Lacey, however, was not in any way interested in a relationship.  Not. At. All.  So, their fun together ended there.  For the time being.

Years later, Lacey met Joe.  Again.  This time, they met while out with mutual friends, but Lacey was STILL not ready for a relationship.  To make matters worse, her girlfriends repeatedly told her that she would end up marrying Joe if she began dating him.  To prevent that whole marriage thing, Lacey chose not to date him.  For the time being.

A year after their second meeting, and after realizing the depth and gentleness of Joe’s heart, as well as his amazing sense of humor, Lacey changed her tune.  She realized that she had found that one person she was, in fact, ready for.  And Joe was that person.

On February 19, 2012, on a snowy day, Lacey and Joe went to visit her parents.  Unknown to Lacey at the time, Joe snuck Lacey’s father away to ask for his blessing on his intended proposal.  Later that evening, an otherwise ordinary evening at home, Lacey began organizing things in the home.  She had just put some things away when she turned to find Joe holding out a ring and asking for her hand in marriage.  Lacey, thrilled, of course said, “yes!”  And on the inside, she was thinking, “It’s about time.”

Just as all good things are worth waiting for, so is this marriage.  Lacey and Joe are kind and fun, and they are beyond funny!  Joe is one of the most involved grooms I have ever met, and it always brightens my day when I open my Facebook account to find a photo from Joe, showing me wedding  images he likes…or images that are just down right hilarious.  Sometimes, he even asks me to pass messages along to Lacey, like to tell her “chill out” about the finger he bruised, because it would NOT ruin the engagement photos.  I am so very excited about their Manor House wedding planned for next month, and I cannot even wrap my mind around how fun their day is going to be.

Lacey and Joe, thank you so much for allowing me to be part of your day and for following my lead despite the frigid temperatures and the temperamental weather.  We made it through, and I hope you area as happy with the photos as I am.  See you soon!

M xoxo

We met at the Dun Roamin’ farm in Mechanicsville for the session.  It had rained all day and was still raining until Lacey and Joe stepped out of the car.  Prayers were answered (literally) and we were able to do the session.  Yes, our fingers and toes were purple by the time we were done, but it was worth it!  Enjoy!
