Ashley and her twin sister, Megan, were graduating…and in order to celebrate accordingly, they decided to have a party. A very large party. And to make the occasion even more celebratory, they decided to include the birthday of their good friend, Jen, at the same time. This was going to be an occasion to remember! That night, as the evening wore on and friends filtered in and out of the party, Ashley was introduced to one of Jen’s friends, Mike. He and his buddy, JB, had stopped by to wish Jen a happy birthday. They enjoyed each other’s company, but beyond a little conversation, nothing happened. Ashley had a boyfriend at the time, so Mike, being the respectful man that he is, decided to keep his thoughts about Ashley to himself.
A couple months later, JB was having a birthday party, and this time it was Jen inviting Ashley, newly single, to tag along for the fun. Ashley and Mike “met” again, but still beyond a little conversation…and maybe a little flirting this time…nothing happened. It may have been Mike’s nerves, or maybe he was just waiting until the time was right, but he didn’t ask for Ashley’s number and they parted ways. It wasn’t until a few days later, after Mike had kicked himself repeatedly…and after searching high and low on Facebook for Ashley, did he muster the courage to reach out to Ashley’s sister to get her phone number. Mike picked up the phone and called Ashley. They shared a first date in Norfolk, getting to know each other over tapas for dinner and Doumar’s for ice cream. It was in that moment that life changed for Ashley and Mike. Forever.
Earlier this year, a couple of Ashley’s friends invited her and Mike to dinner at Byrd and Baldwin Steakhouse. At the last minute, another couple decided to join four of them, pushing dinner back about 30 minutes. Little did Ashley know that ALL of this was part of Mike’s Master Plan… Ashley had been pressuring Mike to have some photos taken, and since they had time to spare waiting for their friends, AND since they were all dressed up, they should go on downtown and have their friends take some photos of them. During this photos session, Ashley’s twin sister and her fiance just happened to run into them, happy to provide some random excuse as to why they were in that part of town. The group decided to move to another location for some more photos, and on the way there, Mike mentioned that the location would be perfect for engagement photos. Following that comment, at the Pagoda Gardens on the Norfolk waterfront…in front of their friends and Ashley’s twin sister, Megan, Mike got down on one knee and asked Ashley to be his wife. Of course she said, “YES!”
Ashley and Mike,
Thank you. Quite honestly, you didn’t know me very well at all, and you welcomed me…and all my crazy posing requests…with open arms. I thoroughly enjoyed our time together at Fort Monroe, and I am pretty excited that the 50,000 mile per hour winds didn’t blow us all away! Crazy, right?!?! I am crazy excited for your Half Moone wedding next year. I know it will be perfection. Just like the two of you. I sincerely hope you love these images and that they bring a smile to your face for years to come. M 🙂
When Ashley asked me if we could do their engagement session at Fort Monroe, I happily agreed. I had never been there and knew nothing about the place, but I knew that I wanted Ashley and Mike to have a perfect engagement session. If a Fort Monroe engagement session was what they wanted, it was what they were going to get! And, boy, am I glad I agreed! The more I am asked to photograph brides across Virginia, the more I realize how much this state has to offer. Fort Monroe gave so much variety to the session, and I LOVE the end results. Check them out!
The eyes, the eyes, the EYES! Is Ashley not stunningly beautiful!?!?
When I met Ashley and her mother to talk about wedding photography, Ashley shared that she liked direction during a shoot so she would know exactly what to do, somewhat implying that she wasn’t super comfortable in front of the camera. I think we can all agree its JUST. NOT. TRUE. These two are old pros.
I LOVE this!
It was a verrrrry windy day! But we tried to work WITH the wind instead of against it. Here, it worked wonderfully!
Some more of my favs.
Gotta love a lighthouse during a session! Especially one that matches your client’s outfit. Holla!
Again with the eyes… Gah!
Ashley, I’ll say it again. You. Are. Beautiful.
We climbed up to the top of the fort for this next series of images. So glad we did.
Check out THAT ring! Good job, Mike!
So in love.
